Robert Redd’s journal, dated April 19, 1956: ‘Monte Carlo. L.R. and I spent the day basking in sunlight under the most memorable blue sky. Even still, the image of the Deo Juvante II casting off into the Mediterranean last night lingers in my mind. He may be a prince, but I have to admit it—Rainier knows how to treat a lady.
‘Gloria tells me that Grace and the Prince began corresponding secretly during the production of “The Swan.” It must strike the lovely couple as serendipitous in the extreme that the young actress would go from playing the role of a princess, to becoming the genuine article. Then again, stranger conversions have happened in our history.
‘And speaking of strange conversions, I must conclude this entry—Sultan Khan and I have a certain Sufi poet to discuss.’
