Lilac / Virginia Sky

Sky_LilacAfter weeks of travel abroad, conducting business with the shapers of history in Europe, Asia and some of the farther-flung corners of the world, Robert Redd would return to his estate in Virginia to relax and rejuvenate.

One of Redd’s favorite places to enjoy these rare moments of solitude was under a lilac tree on the south side of the Redd grounds, accessible from the old veranda that opened into the field. Tomorrow would bring another adventure, of course; Redd might be summoned to Washington, D.C. to do company business, or called to make an appearance at a private function in Newport, or to the wedding of an associate in Lisbon, or Naples, or Atlanta.

Yet the Redd family estate remained a constant in his life—a safe haven to which Robert could always return.
